What conditions does a chiropractor treat?
None. A chiropractor doesn't "treat" any condition. A chiropractor adjusts a vertebral subluxation to reduce and/or eliminate nerve interference so the body can function better.
What is a vertebral subluxation?
A vertebral subluxation is a misalignment of a spinal bone that puts pressure on spinal nerves and/or the spinal cord creating interference to the transmission of nerve impulses.
What causes a vertebral subluxation?
Vertebral Subluxations are caused by three different types of stress: physical, emotional and chemical. Examples of physical stress include falls, accidents, improper lifting, and repetitive microtraumas. Emotional stress often leads to tension/tightness of the muscles in the back and neck and can cause a subluxation. Lastly, chemical stress includes anything that affects muscle tone and hence the position of the vertebrae. Examples include drugs, alcohol and food additives.
We live in a fast-paced society and are bombarded by stress on a daily basis. When the force(stress) is strong enough to overcome the resistance of the body's muscles and ligaments, a vertebrae will subluxate. Some subluxations may be prevented by common-sense, but many will still occur. That is why it is important to maintain the spine on a regular basis.
How will I know if I have a vertebral subluxation?
You won't. Some subluxations are painful but most of the time, subluxations cause no immediate symptoms. It is quite possible for a person to be subluxated for many years without knowing about it. All the while, the damage from the subluxation accumulates. This is because most of the nerves in the body are not sensory or feeling nerves but rather nerves which control the function of different organs and glands. As a result, a symptom is not always present with a subluxation. Only a chiropractor is trained to use objective criteria to determine the presence or absence of a vertebral subluxation. Even the chiropractor has to go to the chiropractor to have his or her spine checked!
Should I be adjusted only where I am hurting?
No. You should be adjusted in any area in which you are subluxated. Often times an area that needs to be adjusted does not correspond to an area that is hurting. Your chiropractor will determine the areas of your spine that are subluxated and make appropriate adjustments.
How often do I need to be adjusted?
As often as you are subluxated. Many patients find they will need to be adjusted more frequently in the beginning stage of their care. As their spine gets stronger and they are able to hold their adjustments better, the frequency of adjustments will be reduced.
Is chiropractic safe for children?
Yes. Your chiropractor has many techniques available to him/her to make chiropractic safe for anyone at any age.
At what age should my child start chiropractic care?
Now. Any age is good to start but the earlier you start, the better off you'll be. Your children need chiropractic care just as much as you do. They're more active then you are and their spines are still maturing. Correcting subluxations in their spines will help them to grow up healthy and stay that way!
